What is Gynecologic Oncology?
Gynecologic Oncology involves the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in the female reproductive system, including cervical, uterine, vaginal, and ovarian cancers.
When you are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, it is important to find a gynecologic oncologist that you trust and who will listen to your concerns.
At RGU Cancer Center, we specialize in the treatment of gynecologic cancers. We have specialized treatments that can target cancer cells while protecting healthy surrounding tissues.
Your Treatment Plan
Treatment will begin with a thorough diagnostic evaluation which may include a pelvic exam, lab work, ultrasound, or other imaging to determine the location, type, and stage of the cancer. Sometimes we may be able to use a procedure known as cytoreductive surgery to reduce or remove tumors that moved into the abdominal cavity.
Gynecologic cancers are complex and often require a range of treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. We will discuss all of these recommendations with you to create a plan that addresses your unique situation and your treatment goals.
Fertility and Gynecologic Oncology
If you are planning to have children after your treatment, we will work with you to develop a plan that preserves fertility if possible. Our goal is the preserve healthy tissue in all cases of gynecologic cancer. We will answer all your questions and give you all the options available so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.
We know that all patients are concerned about side effects in addition to fertility. A diagnosis of cancer always affects many areas of a woman’s life, including sexuality, mental health, physical well-being, and family. We will work with you to address all of your concerns and to implement a wellness plan as part of your treatment.
In addition, we will refer you support networks such as mental health professionals and support groups. Our goal is to create a plan that works toward the wellness of the whole person, including nutrition support, mental health, and sexual function.
