If your doctor suspects you are at risk for prostate cancer because an abnormal prostate finding or elevated PSA a biopsy may be recommended. This diagnostic procedure consists on taking small samples from the suspicious areas of your prostate for examination.

It involves taking small samples of prostate tissue for examination under a microscope. This biopsy is necessary when results from other tests, such as a PSA blood test or digital rectal exam, suggest the possibility of cancer. The two primary methods are transrectal and transperineal biopsies.
Transrectal Biopsy: This is the most common method. Here, a biopsy needle is inserted through the rectum to reach the prostate. This procedure is usually guided by ultrasound imaging to accurately target specific areas of the prostate.
Transperineal Biopsy: In this method, the biopsy needle is inserted through the skin between the anus and the scrotum (the perineum). This approach is often used when a more extensive sampling of the prostate is needed or if a transrectal biopsy isn’t advisable.
