Beloved doctor recognized as “Best of the Border” 2014
It only take a few moments in the company of Javier E. Lozano, M.D.,F.A.C.S. to see why he’s been honored as The El Paso Times 2014 “Best of the Border” in El Paso Urology care.
His calm, friendly demeanor helps put patients at ease no matter what they face.
In today’s fast-paced, high-demand world of medicine, Dr. Lozano maintains the same personalized quality of care that he did when he began practicing in El Paso in 1977.
In fact, several of his patients have been with him since birth; choosing to return to Dr. Lozano for urological care throughout their lives.
Dr. Lozano considers it a privilege to serve the Borderland community. In some cases he’s had the pleasure of serving three generations of patients within the same family.
A Clear Symbol of Quality of Care
One clear sign of how Dr. Lozano’s patient feel about him is a collection of crosses displayed in his office and at his home. Every cross in Dr. Lozano’s office was a gift from a grateful patient.
“My patients have given me close to 200 crosses over the last 25 years,” explains Dr. Lozano. “Crosses from Rome, Lebanon, Israel, Jerusalem, Latin America, Mexico, Spain and so many other places.”
While every cross in the collection is special to Dr. Lozano, the many crosses that were handmade by patients are particularly treasured. “This is the reward,” he says as he points to the wall of crosses in his office. “This is why I keep loving what I do.”
Born and Raised on the El Paso/Juarez Border
Dr. Lozano was born and raised in Juarez, Mexico, so El Paso is like a second home. After completing college and medical school at UNAM in Mexico City, Mexico, he decided to come to the States. “I wanted to learn more and do more,” he recalls.
After 16 years of studying and then practicing at top universities and hospitals around the country, Dr. Lozano decided to return to the Borderland in 1977. Here are a few of the highlights of his career:
- Developing the first kidney transplant program in El Paso
- Recruiting the first kidney transplant surgeon to El Paso
- Serving uninsured patients at University Medical Center in El Paso
- Serving as a founding member of the Rio Grande Urology P.A. and Radiation Center when it opened in 2008
- Mentoring and partnering with younger physicians at Rio Grande Urology
A Passion For Patient Care
Patients are like family for Dr. Lozano.
That philosophy has guided his patient care throughout for over 38 years, despite the changing landscape of how medicine is practiced. Dr. Lozano has always enjoyed strong bonds with his patients and their families.
“You ought to treat your patients like your best friend or family member, so you can really make a difference in their lives,” he says. “You have to be honest first. If you don’t know what is wrong, you have to tell them.”
He is one of the few doctors who still tries to speak to every patient in his office before seeing them in an examination room. “My reward is that my patients have the time to talk to me and have a reasonable time to obtain answers to their questions,” he explains. “I don’t want any of my patients to leave my office with any doubt or concerns.”
Urology is a life-long pursuit for Dr. Lozano. “My philosophy in life is to follow your passion. If you do what you’re passionate about, you’ll be a successful individual. If you do what you like to do, you’re going to excel. You need to have a real passion and feeling in your heart,” he says.
Honoring a Career Well Done
The many patients who Dr. Lozano has had the opportunity to treat, get to know, and improve their quality of life is thanks enough for his many years of hard work. Being selected as the 2014 “Best of the Border” in El Paso Urology through the El Paso Times is icing on the cake.
“This award was a surprise. This was from the community, not from colleagues or family, and that means a lot to me. It was such an honor for me to receive this honor at this point in my career,” says Dr. Lozano.
“I couldn’t have accomplished what I have since starting my urology practice in El Paso without the help and support of my wife and family along with my loyal staff, some of whom have been with me for many years. My management team has always been very supportive as well. I have also had the good fortune to be surrounded by medical colleagues both in urology and in the community who are committed to delivering the highest quality of care to the residents of El Paso. It has truly been an honor to know and learn from them over the years.
His advice to others is to never stop learning. “That’s one of the wonderful things about life,” he says. “If you love what you do, you never stop learning.”
