Here at Rio Grande Urology, we have the privilege of working with many veterans to help them get the health care they need. Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware that veterans are at high risk for prostate cancer, and have an incidence rate of approximately twice that of the general population. In fact, it’s the most common cancer diagnosis among veterans in the U.S.
That’s why RGU is proud to partner with Veterans Prostate Cancer Awareness and ZERO to help increase awareness and education around prostate cancer while providing tools and resources to help veterans get the best possible care. Several of our doctors are veterans, having served in the military prior to stepping into private practice — including Dr. Michael Bagg, Dr. Thomas Gormley, and Dr. Daniel Morilla. They understand your needs as a veteran and are ready to help.
If you are active or retired military and have not yet been tested for prostate cancer, here’s what you need to know:
- Know your risk factors: 1 in 5 veterans is diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and some veterans are at greater risk than others. Those who served in the Vietnam or Korean wars are a greater risk as a result of potential exposure to certain chemicals during the wars, specifically Agent Orange. If you served during this time or are a veteran age 50 or older, it’s time to get tested for prostate cancer.
- Meet with your doctor: Schedule an appointment to talk with your doctor about your health history to find out when you should start getting tested, and how frequently you may need to be tested. Most men are typically screened every one to three years depending on their individual risk factors.
- Understand your military and veterans benefits: The Department of Veterans Affairs provides health benefits for those who meet requirements. Don’t wait until you’re diagnosed to explore these benefits to ensure you have the healthcare you need. If you are receiving treatment at RGU, our healthcare team can also help you navigate your benefits.
- Get the treatment you need: If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, RGU’s Advanced Prostate Cancer Center offers the latest treatment options. Our expert urological team is ready to come alongside and help you determine the best course of treatment based on your diagnosis and history.
